Walgreens is shuttering more than 20 of its retail pharmacy stores this month as part of a larger strategy to cut costs and close underperforming locations. The closures are part of a broader turnaround effort announced in October 2024.
Why This Matters
Like many retail giants, Walgreens has faced mounting pressure from the rise in online shopping, post-pandemic foot traffic declines, and inflation’s impact on consumer spending. As malls continue to lose relevance—research firm Green Street Advisors predicts 25% of America’s top malls will close by 2027—brands like Walgreens are rethinking their in-store footprint.
A wall of water: the four-story-high wave that defied all scientific explanation in 2020
Background: A Shrinking National Presence
Walgreens currently operates around 8,500 locations across the U.S. but has already closed 2,000 stores over the past decade. In 2025 alone, 500 more stores are expected to shut down as the chain implements its three-year plan to close 1,200 underperforming outlets nationwide.
What Walgreens Is Saying
CEO Tim Wentworth confirmed that the closures are part of a long-term restructuring plan.
“We are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits,” he said.
As more customers turn to online services like Amazon Pharmacy, traditional pharmacies face declining profits and rising operational costs. Walgreens reported a $3 billion loss in Q4 of fiscal 2024, up from $180 million the year before. Currently, only about 6,000 stores remain profitable, according to Wentworth.
Despite the loss, the company posted $37.55 billion in Q4 sales—up 6% year over year—with earnings that beat Wall Street expectations. The $3B loss is largely tied to valuation changes related to opioid settlement liabilities.

What Experts Are Saying
Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group, told Newsweek:
“Walgreens is the latest case of private equity cost-cutting. They’re minimizing retail footprint, lease obligations, and maximizing ROI.”
Drew Powers, Powers Financial Group founder:
“There used to be a drugstore on every corner—often Walgreens. Now, foot traffic has slowed, and big-box stores plus online competition have taken over.”
Alex Beene, financial educator, added:
“Online competitors and rising prices are making some stores unprofitable. Walgreens tried to fix it, but closures became the only option.”
What Happens Next?
More closures appear likely.
“Consumers should expect fewer nearby locations, longer travel times, and possibly no local Walgreens at all in some areas,” Thompson warned.
Powers added,
“This isn’t unique to Walgreens. Other pharmacy chains may also face difficult decisions as industry pressures grow.”
